Description

“Negotiating Change” is an annual joint course of the Institue of International Development (University of Vienna) and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), with the aim of simulating a United Nations General Assembly on a global “hot topic” in sustainable development. 1000 Atmosphären joined the main organizers Dr. Lorenz Probst and Mag. Wolfgang Gruber to open up the experience to the public and enable roleplayers to participate as stakeholders during the simulation.

During the two day simulation national stakeholders – portrayed by the students, who prepared the respective positions and strategies during the university course – confronted with external stakeholders such as Lobbyists, NGOs or News Outlets with their respective agendas – portrayed by the roleplayers – were tasked with reaching unanimous agreement on a resolution on tackling environmental migration. Additionally, students from the Centre for Translation Studies provided simultaneous translation of the full conference in several languages.

The simulation took place in the facilities of the United Nations Offices at the Vienna International Centre, where the participants immersed in a challenging 360° experience, providing a deep inside view into the the workings and processes of the United Nations General Assembly as well as the imminent challenges of environmental migration.
