As convicted criminals, you've been given a choice. Execution, or a year of service in the Town Guard. Since you're here, you must have chosen the latter.

We'll be going through your shifts as rookie guards, dealing with minor crimes in a major city while trying to keep the city in order, keep yourself out of trouble, and maybe make some cash along the way.
